Here are six of the most common gastrointestinal problems — and what can be done about them.
  1. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) Heartburn happens, but if it occurs regularly, you may need to be evaluated for GERD. ...
  2. Chronic Diarrhea
  3. Chronic Constipation.
  4. Gastroenteritis.
  5. Ulcers.
  6. Hemorrhoids.

Upper GI endoscopy can be used to identify many different diseases:
  • gastroesophageal reflux disease.
  • ulcers.
  • cancer link.
  • inflammation, or swelling.
  • precancerous abnormalities such as Barrett's esophagus.
  • celiac disease.
  • strictures or narrowing of the esophagus.
  • blockages.

Colonoscopy from a Gastroenterologist

Colonoscopy is performed to examine the large intestine for disease, most commonly colorectal cancer. It is also used to evaluate symptoms such as rectal bleeding, weight loss, abdominal pain, anemia, constipation and diarrhea.

These specialists primarily diagnose and treat GI diseases in both men and women. They perform endoscopic procedures, in which they use specialized instruments to view the GI tract and make a diagnosis. They don't perform surgery.
